Over the past few years, several events and activities on data drive innovation have taken place in the MENA region. Although most of the activities took place in the gulf region and in UAE in particular (due to the supportive eco-system), the past and future events indicate the value of data in development and a growing awareness and data literacy in the region.
It may not be possible to list each and every related event, we have compiled a growing number of past and planned events:
IDRC MENA organized a workshop on wise cities at the IDRC office in Cairo on May 22, 2016. Dr. Hossam Abdelgwad and Samah el-Tantawy spoke about opportunities and Challenges of smart cities and the use of data and technologies to drive innovation. The objective of this workshop was to shed light into a broader concept, in particular focusing on how the “social factor”, Internet of Things (IoT) and “data-driven innovation” could drive what is referred to as a “Wise City”.
The concept of “smart city” has attracted a lot of attention in recent years and had multiple definitions by different sectors and governments. While in this context there is no attempt to define what a smart city is; it is relevant to highlight the key factors in making a city smart: smart technology, empowered humans/citizens, smart public services, efficient management of resources, and sustainable growth and evelopment. IDRC, Infotimes and Faculty of Computers and Information organized a workshop on data visualization at Cairo University on May 12, 2016. The workshop aimed to introduce and familiarize the participants with the basics of visual analytics process with practical training on one of the world’s leading software in this field. The main focus was on data design and how to convert data into graphs and provided several applications that help in data design process.

The center for Development Studies at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina organized a workshop on December 15 and 16, 2015, to shed light on the sources of data and statistics in several areas, and the ways of analyzing and collecting them. The workshop focused on the problems facing these processes and their consequences for public policy making, in order to offer recommendations for future directions.
