MERO Policy Forum Series: Second - A Critical Look at Openness in Development: Roundtable discussion
On September 15, 2015 IDRC Regional office for Middle East and North Africa organized the second forum to examine critically the concept of Openness in Development. The event featured experts in this field including Dr. Ruhiya Seward, Senior Program officer and Dr. Matthew Smith, Senior Program officer from IDRC’s Networked Economies program and attended by representatives from the donor community, government agencies, academia, civil society organizations
This roundtable discussion addressed the opportunities and challenges related to the open data revolution for development in the MENA region, including open and big data, open educational resources, data-rich communication and data-driven innovation.
The workshop highlights the concept of “openness”, which has played an important role in the significant changes in international development over the past decade, and the area of “open development”, which connects to open access, governance, data, and educational resources. This event engaged representatives from academia, civil society, and government in a strategic dialogue about the concept of openness and our understanding of the opportunities and challenges associated with it.
