IDRC MENA organized a workshop on wise cities at the IDRC office in Cairo on May 22, 2016. Dr. Hossam Abdelgwad and Samah el-Tantawy spoke about opportunities and Challenges of smart cities and the use of data and technologies to drive innovation. The objective of this workshop was to shed light into a broader concept, in particular focusing on how the “social factor”, Internet of Things (IoT) and “data-driven innovation” could drive what is referred to as a “Wise City”.
The concept of “smart city” has attracted a lot of attention in recent years and had multiple definitions by different sectors and governments. While in this context there is no attempt to define what a smart city is; it is relevant to highlight the key factors in making a city smart: smart technology, empowered humans/citizens, smart public services, efficient management of resources, and sustainable growth and evelopment.
